There is an awful lot to share, the point of this update just to bring it to your attention that we have been able to do some white metal casting. We haven't got everything and we haven't got mountains of the stuff we have produced, but its a start.

Some of what we said on 27/03/20 has come to pass but not all of it

COVID-19 / Coronavirus - We are open for business and operating as normally as we can.

As it turns out we have had little problem in our supply chain for materials, our 'overflow' suppliers have been a little different.
Machines have been kept running because thats what they do, so some components are in surplus. The problem is that as predicted we've been so busy with mail order that any operation that requires a person in front of it (all the assembly and packing) has suffered, so some items have become low or even exhausted. When this happens we have assembled enough to deal with the immediate demand but this is so inefficient and wasteful compared with the normal production batch size.

The one thing we didn't consider in our initial Covid thoughts was that all our trade customers would also become busy and we would see increased demand from them and this has resulted in us getting quite far behind on that front.

All in all despite the increased business we're in about the same position as we normally would be at this time of year, which we are extremely greatful for as there are many businesses and people far worse off.

COVID-19 / Coronavirus - We are open for business and operating as normally as we can.
I am working in isolation at our unit (we can't take the machines home) and Pat is working in isolation at home.

We are already seeing an increase in Mail and Telephone orders and we're hoping that this will support the loss of the four Spring shows, as these represent about a sixth of our income.
However, whilst most welcome this is not without its own set of challenges. A quick and dirty calculation suggests that if we're lucky it may increase our daily mail order by up to 300% over the period covering the cancelled shows.
This is likely to impinge on production, which might lead to some shortages and hence delays in dispatch and we would ask for your patience and understanding.

There are a few outside factors that might cause us problems such as the ability to obtain raw material such steel and brass and our ability to use a third party for the Chemical Blackening of certain components. Also, if 'Lockdown' is tightened it may be that the authorities don't agree that isolating in my unit is the same as isolating at home, in which case we'll have to suspend actual manufacture and concentrate on assembly and packing at home.

You may also be thinking why we're bothering when the government will support us. Well, as of this date it seems they won't, because in the past we have taken a portion of our income as dividend on profits.
The astute amongst you may turn around and say, 'yes but when applying for Universal Credit the government takes dividends into consideration as income', and you would be correct.

Anyway, we're here to provide the best service we can under the circumstances and main thing is for EVERYBODY to keep themselves safe.

( I'm staggered that we haven't put anything on this news page for six and a half years, although as someone once said to me 'what can't speak, can't lie')

Not to do with products, but entirely to do with the business. Colin now owns / controls the business outright. Chris will play not further part (not that he did) in any part of the Alan Gibson business. Colin also no longer has any interests in Chris' activities.

Wagon buffers are now available cast in brass by the lost wax process, the hole is now cast in to the body so no drilling is required, except for cleaning out any casting plaster residue.

The range of Signal Components has been re-introduced in to the catalogue
13th Jun 10

Well here we are in our nice summer break between shows; as usual we're looking to get some development work done in the quieter period. A definite this year will be re-introducing the Signals, we know it definite because we're about 80% of the way through it. We WILL be working on the self quartering wheels. There are also some other projects such as re working the wagon buffers so that in brass rather than white metal and have the hole already through instead of having to drill them, and a 4mm brass centred wheel kit in a bag for both Drivers and Bogie/Tender wheels. Along with all this we'll be making some alterations in production equipment, methods etc to improve our efficiency and maintain/improve our quality.

28th Dec 09
Self Quartering Wheels - We are serious about developing the range to include self quartering versions, unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) we've been busy supplying to our existing customers. We're hoping that we'll be able to kick start things again in the new year.
26th Jun 09
We've just noticed that there has been a problem with a batch of short crankpin bushes it seems somebody nodded off and didn't notice the edge going off the drill and wandering through the bush making it eccentric. We're not sure how many have been shipped. If you have some eccentric bushes we will of course exchange them.
25th Jun 09

In a further development, prototype self-quartering wheels have been produced. The wheel selected is suitable for an LNER P2 and was linked into a chassis building feature in MRJ 191 for testing purposes. The theory and process has proved sound. It involves using the existing detail tool; therefore the range can be expanded without producing all new tooling.
The system involves an axle with square ends and a taped hole, the ABS plastic centre has a matching square directly moulded in to it. The wheel is secured to the axle using a countersunk torx screw.
The existing range of wheels will still be available and branded as ‘standard’ with the self quartering version branded as ‘deluxe’. It is intended to initially release popular wheels starting with the standard GWR 4’7” wheel. Work is in progress and releases will be publicised as they are made, pricing has yet to be determined, but will be at a small premium.

We have shipped the first kits since the business changed hands. Two batches, one of 12 GWR 850 Saddle Tanks and one of 12 GWR 1076 ‘Buffalo’ Saddle Tanks. Both batches have been made to order based on a pre order system where the kits are produced when demand matches an economic production run. Two further kits are in production, with more planned.

We have decided to pass on the cut in the VAT rate to all our customers, we did consider leaving the VAT inclusive prices alone as £5 per driving axle and £2.50 per bogie/tender axle which would have made the maths easier than £4.89 and £2.45 per axle.
Therefore, for trade customers the net price will remain the same. For mail order from the workshop and for exhibitions we'll use the existing prices but multiply the final total by 0.9787 to reflect the cut in the VAT rate.
We will not be reprinting the catalogue as yet since this is only a temporary reduction in the rate, however we will add an explanation to the cover of the next batches of catalogues.

We have discovered that due to a manufacturing glitch some defective 4mm Medium Handrail Stanchions have been packed and shipped out to customers. In essence the slender shank is bent over by a variable amount and theoretically the number of defective items in a pack of 25 could range from 0% to 100%. If you have any defective items please returm them to us for exchange.

2nd Jun 08
We've produced some batches of 3mm wagon and coach wheels for trade customers as well as narrowguage wheels to OOn3 and OO9. We have almost exhausted our stocks of 20mm and 15mm axles but more are on the way. We would like to produce these ranges in batches at intervals throughout the year. Anyone who may be interested is encouraged to put in a proviosnal order ASAP
29th May 08

We have discovered that due to a manufacturing glitch SOME Bogie / Tender Wheels available since April 08 are a 'slack' or 'sloppy' fit. If you have purchased any of these there are two options open to you: Return them to us to be re-centred (real word?) or use your choice of adhesive to secure the wheels to the axle.
